Voyager turned to the most experienced and most qualified researchers in the field of education to develop Vmath®, Voyager's math intervention system fo elementary and middle school. Thanks to their input, our program is built on scientifically based research principles of instruction for struggling math students.

Dr. Michael Hynes, University of Central Florida
Vmath Senior Advisor

Dr. Hynes, a UCF Pegasus Professor, was the founding director of the Lockheed Martin/UCF Academy for Mathematics and Science and held the Lockheed Martin Eminent Scholar Chair in Mathematics and Science Education for 15 years. He is the Project Director for NCTM's new series "Mission Mathematics," which integrates math, science, and NASA research into interesting math lessons. Dr. Hynes brings his expertise in all levels of math education, as well as in the areas of math science, and technology.

Dr. David Rock, Columbus State University
Vmath Advisor

Dr. Rock is Dean of the College of Education at Columbus State University and co-author of the texts Teaching K-6 Mathematics and Teaching Secondary Mathematics. Building on his background as a middle school and high school math teacher, Dr. Rock hosts the popular "The Math Contest," a web site that features a different mathematics problem each week. Dr. Rock brings his experience in motivating math students and his interest in technology to all levels of Vmath.

Linda Gojak, John Carroll University
Vmath Advisor

Ms. Gojak is the director of the university's Center for Mathematics and Science Education, Teaching, and Technology. Winner of numerous awards for excellence in teaching, she has been involved in several PBS math projects and frequently speaks at mathematics conferences. Ms. Gojak is president of the National Council of Supervisors of Mathematics (NCSM) and brings to Vmath her passion for improving and invigorating math teaching and learning.

Terri Belcher, University of California-Berkeley
Vmath Advisor

Ms. Belcher has spent her career in mathematics education teaching high school mathematics, providing professional development to teachers, parents, and administrators, and coaching middle school math teachers. The focus of her efforts has been to improve access for those who learn, enhance capacity for those who teach, and empower vision for those who lead. Influenced by 15 years with the EQUALS Programs, her expertise in designing effective instruction to meet the needs of culturally diverse populations, language minority students, female students, and low-performing students is evident in all aspects of Vmath.

Dr. Marcy Stein, University of Washington, Tacoma
Vmath Advisor, Direct Instruction

Dr. Stein is a Professor of Education at University of Washington, Tacoma where she prepares teachers to address the needs of students who are at risk for academic failure and those with high incidence disabilities. She is a nationally known expert on translating educational research into effective instructional practice and is the author of many books and articles, including Designing Effective Mathematics Instruction – A Direct Instruction Approach with Diane Kinder, Jerry Silbert and Douglas Carnine. Dr. Stein reviews the Vmath content to ensure adherence to direct instruction tenets.

Dr. Russell Gersten, University of Oregon
Vmath Advisor, Research and Evaluation

Dr. Gersten is a Professor Emeritus at the University of Oregon and is renowned in the area of educational research. He serves on the National Advisory Panel on Mathematics, a Presidentially appointed committee, and sub-chairs the Committee on Instructional Practices and Materials. He has received many awards, including the Excellence in Research Award from the Association for Direct Instruction. He has published extensively in the areas of special education, English language learners, effective instructional models, and effective math instruction for low achievers. Dr. Gersten ensures that Vmath follows "best practices" as proven in scientifically based research and monitors the validity of Vmath's related research.

Dr. Mark Shinn, National Louis University
Vmath Advisor, Assessment

Dr. Shinn is a Professor of School Psychology and a nationally recognized consultant on implementation of Curriculum-Based Measures CBM) within a problem-solving model. He is the recipient of the APA Jack Bardon Award for Distinguished Service and a member of the review panel for the Office of Special Education Programs OSEP) National Center on Student Progress Monitoring. Dr. Shinn has edited several books on CBM and published more than 75 journal articles and book chapters on the topic. Dr. Shinn designed the progress monitoring system for Vmath and reviews all assessments for validity.
