Intervention Day At a Glance
The "Plus"—systematic, explicit instruction in key skills
Fluency practice begins the day as students read instructional-level text to practice rate, accuracy, and prosody. Kindergarten students use read-alouds for oral vocabulary and comprehension. |
| Targeted Word Study provides teacher-led lessons in word study, sight words and spelling. Passage reading develops skills in fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. |
The "Adventure"—students apply new skills
to a theme based-adventure
The Activator draws students into the adventure and establishes the context for the day through oral language development. |
| Teacher-directed Instructional Focus develops skills and strategies necessary for success in reading. Students engage in paired reading, choral reading, and modeled think-alouds. |
Learning Stations provide independent, small-group activities facilitated by student team leaders. |
Challenge Lessons deliver systematic, explicit instruction in small, teacher-directed, same-ability groups. |
| Response and Practice gives students the opportunity to reflect on what they have learned. They write and collaborate using pre-writing, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing. Theme-related projects demonstrate real-world connections to reading. |
The Debriefer concludes the lesson as students, prompted by the teacher, discuss what they will tell their families about that day's Adventure. |
| In Houston, more than 40,000 students participated in Voyager summer programs, and more than 2,000 teachers received Voyager training. I highly recommend the Voyager curriculum. The program has enriched the lives of our children and is one of the programs that has contributed to improved student performance. |
