National Math Panel Cites TransMath

TransMath was extensively cited by the National Math Panel, specifically in the Instructional Practices Committee section, as a promising intervention that incorporates the contemporary research to support the rigors of today's math needs. Additional findings of the National Math Panel further validates the pedagogy and philosophy behind TransMath—the need for fewer topics in greater depth, the need for explicit, systematic instruction, plus the need to focus on the critical foundations of algebra.

Both research and the National Math Panel report show that there are the critical components for successful entry into algebra. These include:

Fluency with whole numbers
Fluency with fractions
Particular aspects of geometry and measurement.

These topics are the cornerstone of the TransMath curriculum.

TransMath Research

The TransMath curriculum was designed by Dr. John Woodward and Mary Stroh. John Woodward, the lead author, is Dean of the School of Education at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Washington, and has more than 25 years of educational research behind him.

Three broad design principles distinguish TransMath from widely used reform-based programs. The principles include:

1. Ensuring that students have relevant background knowledge
2. Using a balanced approach in computation practice
3. Addressing the need for careful time management

Each principle has a considerable research base in remedial and special education research.
