Achieve Proficiency on the SAT-9

Voyager Passport Proves Successful for At-Risk Third-graders

BRADENTON, Fla., November 7, 2005 –Third-graders in the School District of Manatee County who were at risk of retention increased their scores on the Stanford Achievement Test (SAT-9), with 72 percent of students passing the standardized test compared to last year’s 27 percent promotion rate. Superintendent Dr. Roger Dearing attributes the improvement to the district’s implementation of Voyager Passport™, a K-6 reading intervention program from Voyager Expanded Learning.

Manatee third-graders who were identified as "at risk" of being retained were enrolled in Voyager Passport for 60 minutes every day for 30 days this past summer. "Our district achieved the greatest summer gains in the state," Dr. Dearing said. "Voyager Passport made all the difference."

Voyager Passport is a targeted reading intervention program that moves struggling readers to grade level proficiency. The program immediately identifies students who struggle with reading; intervenes with explicit, systematic instruction; and monitors progress until intervention is no longer needed. Voyager Passport fits into and strengthens all major reading programs by providing effective instruction in the five essential components of reading to students who need help the most.

The School District of Manatee County implemented Voyager Passport in second and third grade district-wide during summer 2005 to accelerate more students to grade-level proficiency. The district is continuing the program for the 2005-2006 school year.
