More than 1000 Books Donated to Farmers Branch
Elementary after International Literacy Day Celebration

Farmers Branch, Texas, October 13, 2005 – Students at Farmers Branch Elementary School, located at 13521 Tom Field Road, will have the opportunity to pick from more than 1000 books that employees from Voyager Expanded Learning will deliver to the school on October 13, 2005, between 11:30 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. Each student in grades K-5 will be able to choose one book, and the remaining titles will be distributed to classrooms and the school library.

The books were collected by Voyager employees during the company’s celebration of International Literacy Day on September 8 th. Employees donated new or gently-used books for elementary school students or gave a cash donation of $5 that bought three new books.

International Literacy Day was founded on September 8, 1966, at a conference on the Eradication of Illiteracy. The United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) inaugurated its official observance of International Literacy Day in 1967. Since then, a community of nations hosts local and international events that recognize the importance of literacy every September 8th. In the last five years, Education for All (an initiative of UNESCO) set the goal of increasing literacy rates by 50 percent by 2015, and the United Nations adopted a resolution to make 2003-2012 the Literacy Decade.
