For Immediate ReleaseVoyager Hosts Literacy Summit for New Mexico EducatorsAlbuquerque, NM, June 1, 2006 – Educators from across New Mexico, Arizona and Texas attended a "Closing the Achievement Gap" Summit hosted by Voyager Expanded Learning® on May 11 and 12 at the Sandia Resort and Casino in Albuquerque. Researchers and education leaders discussed challenges within their specific districts, special education legislation, scientifically based reading and math programs and the placement of highly-qualified teachers in every classroom. Presenters at the summit included: Dr. Robert Pasternack, former United States assistant secretary of special education and rehabilitative programs, Dr. Donald Deschler, University of Kansas and Passport Reading Journeys™ advisor, Dr. Antonio Fierro, Reading First director, El Paso Independent School District and Ms. Terri Sainz, director of elementary education, Socorro Independent School District. New Mexico Senator Joseph Carraro spoke briefly, answering questions and updating the audience on education legislation in New Mexico. "The education system is there to teach kids how to learn. I am thrilled to see Voyager programs working in our state," said Senator Carraro. The Public Education Department’s New Mexico Reading First program currently partners with the College of Santa Fe and Voyager Expanded Learning to offer a Reading Endorsement program for all kindergarten through third-grade Reading First classroom teachers and reading coaches called VoyagerU. Through the partnership, more than 350 teachers and reading coaches are enrolled in the program. Additional literacy summits will continue to be held across the country throughout the year.
