COTTONWOOD PUBLIC SCHOOLS RECEIVE
TITLE I ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
Oklahoma City – Oklahoma State Superintendent Sandy Garrett and the State Board of Education presented the Title I Academic Achievement Award for reading and math totaling more than $26,000 to Cottonwood Public Schools during a ceremony Feb. 23 at the state capitol in Oklahoma City. Cottonwood has implemented the Voyager Universal Literacy System® as its core reading program since the 20012002 school year and Voyager Passport™ for reading intervention since 20042005. This year, the district added Voyager's newest intervention program, Vmath®, and it is showing early success.
Cottonwood Public Schools Superintendent Teri Brecheen accepted the award on behalf of the small rural district. "It was such exciting news," Brecheen said. "We know Voyager is the best reading program we have ever been a part of, and we love the new Vmath program."
The Academic Achievement Award is given to Title I schools with student poverty rates of 75 percent or higher that either:
- Exceed the state's Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) in mathematics and/or reading (as calculated by the scores of all students tests) for the last two consecutive school years, or
- Make the most gains in mathematics and/or reading achievement (as calculated by the scores of all students tested) from the 20032004 school year to the 20042005 school year.
Cottonwood was one of the top five Oklahoma schools in this category to exceed the No Child Left Behind Adequate Yearly Progress requirements in both reading and math for two consecutive years. (In fact, the school has exceeded the AYP requirements for three school years in a row, and also received the Title I Academic Achievement Award in 2005.)
