LANGUAGE! Fourth Edition and Focus on English Learning are for students who are more than two years below grade level and need to acquire knowledge of Academic Language as well as the structure and function of the English language. These students often represent three populations: English language learners, students with special needs, and "instructional casualties."

LANGUAGE! 4th Edition provides research-validated, mastery-based, intensive reading and language arts intervention that targets non-readers, struggling readers and English Learners in grades 3-12.

LANGUAGE! Focus on English Learning provides targeted instruction to English language learners in grades 3-12 and includes Everyday English, a six-week course for newcomers to the English language.

LANGUAGE! 4th Edition Focus on English Learning

Curriculum Features

LANGUAGE! accelerates learning:

Ensures appropriate student placement through multiple entry points
Explicit, mastery-based, multisensory instruction
Data-driven differentiation
Repeated exposure to key concepts and ample practice

Consistent instructional routine including "I do, we do, you do" model

Exposes students to increasingly difficult text, and expands student vocabulary and critical thinking skills

Multiple Entry Points
The teacher begins by assessing skills giving the LANGUAGE! Placement Test which directs appropriate placement into one of three two-year levels: Book A, Book B, or Book C Everyday English, Focus on English Learning Book A or C or LANGUAGE! Book E. Ongoing progress monitoring, differentiation, and online assessment guides teacher instruction through all book levels.
LANGUAGE! Six-Step Process
Each LANGUAGE! lesson develops content understanding through integrated instruction of the six key literacy strands and is soundly based on the most widely accepted reading research—moving students from speech or sound to written text.

Phonemic Awareness and Phonics: Helps students learn the building blocks of the English language

Word Recognition and Spelling: Teaches students how to use the sound-spelling correspondences to fluently read and spell words

Vocabulary and Morphology: Develops the meanings of words students can read and spell

Grammar and Usage: Increases understanding of sentence parts and patterns

Listening and Reading Comprehension: Teaches comprehension using three different levels of text, each with an increasing level of difficulty

Speaking and Writing: Develops communication skills through speaking and writing
Try It Together
The lessons in LANGUAGE! follow the gradual-release model of instruction. Lessons are designed to transfer responsibility from the teacher to the students. As their skill increases, students work more independently. A system of icons cues teachers for the level of scaffolding.
Differentiated Instruction
Lesson-specific teaching strategies enhance instruction for both English language learners and students with special needs.

Performance data drives differentiation.

Prescriptive teaching boxes guide teachers to reinforce or reteach based on student performance.

Planning and Pacing Guides use icons to identify activities that accommodate specific learner needs.

Technology tools help teachers develop materials to meet specific student instructional needs.

Interactive technology allows students to practice skills and content.
