| Placement Assessment | |
| The (LRS) LANGUAGE! Reading Scale Placement Test assessment is given to the entire class or designated students prior to beginning LANGUAGE! instruction. This assessment, which is a reading comprehension tool based on the Lexile readability scale, identifies weaknesses of individual struggling students and determines (along with district criteria) appropriate entry points into instruction.
Each Placement Assessment (Grades 3-5 or 6-12) consists of seven non-fiction passages on a variety of topics; the passages are arranged in order of increasing text difficulty. Test items are formed by the deletion of words from the passages. Students select the best word to fill in the blank. Responding correctly requires understanding the text surrounding the word. |

| Baseline Assessment | ![]() |
| The baseline tests are administered prior to entering the curriculum. These tests give teachers a baseline indicator of students' skills, which can be used to measure growth as students progress through the curriculum. Baseline tests include fluency, spelling, comprehension and writing. | |
| Ongoing Assessment | ![]() |
| Regular testing of student mastery of the content, concepts, and skills taught in the curriculum ensures that teachers have current information about each student in order to adjust pacing or provide instructional support activities for individual students. | |
| Summative Assessment | |
| End-of-Book Content Mastery tests provide teachers with a view of each student's overall mastery of curriculum content. The interpretation of these results guides teachers' decisions regarding whether to move students to the next book or to reteach particular concepts and provide additional practice for specific skills. Progress Indicators monitor growth in the critical skills of literacy. These tests are the same ones used for baseline and are designed to provide valid and reliable measures of speed and accuracy of word reading, reading comprehension, spelling of regular and irregular words, and writing. | ![]() |
| VPORT Data Management | |

| Informal Assessment | |
| Ongoing informal assessments help teachers gauge student understanding. LANGUAGE! lessons facilitate opportunities to see students' reactions to instructions, to listen as students respond to the frequent questions, and to evaluate daily work. Lessons include specific review and reteaching suggestions, and appropriate questioning techniques. | |
