| I am working on a state grant application that cannot exceed 50 pages. How many pages should I allow for each of the required sections of the application (objectives, approach, evaluation, etc.)? Should each section have an equal number of pages? A useful rule of thumb is to multiply the number of points you could earn for any single section by the total number of pages allowed. For example, if the objectives section is worth 15 points out of 100 (15%), then you could reasonably devote 7-8 pages (15% of 50) to this part of the application. As you work on your proposal, write what you think you should say - then see if it fits the available space, using the suggested rule of thumb. If it doesn't, start with the easy fixes. If the funding source has not specified a font size or margins, downsize the font a point or two, or change to a smaller font. Since you want the words you've toiled over to be read, be sure the font is not too small. If necessary, widen the margins slightly. You don't want the document to look like you've spilled words all over the page, so be careful here. You can usually manage a slightly shorter margin at the bottom of the page without anyone noticing. If these solutions don't bring you within the page limits, or if margin and font sizes have been stipulated, take out your mental scalpel and start cutting. Use the fewest words possible to convey an idea. This is harder than it sounds - especially when you're writing to convince the reviewer to give you money. More words seem more persuasive. But "a variety of ways" or "different ways" is simpler and shorter than saying "a variety of different ways". Cutting words here and there can save you significant space. Even if you have plenty of room, see if phrases can be shortened without changing the meaning - it will give your writing more punch. Do you have a question about grants and funding?
