Reading Intervention

The Adventure
Students explore the mighty Roman Empire as they read about the exploits of Time Trackers caught in a time warp. A variety of print resources are used to develop and enhance reading fluency through the study of the structure of Roman society, engineering feats, and artistic achievements of this great civilization. Skills such as phonological awareness, vocabulary development, and comprehension are taught, modeled, and assessed as students discover links between the past and present.

The Birth of an Empire
Tracking friends who suddenly disappear from a baseball dugout, students immerse themselves in the culture of ancient Rome. Reading from daily mysterious scroll messages, students learn to read multisyllabic words and enhance vocabulary while playing Circus Maximus bingo. Students create jigsaw puzzles, which allows them to develop their skills to follow oral and written directions.

Everyday Life
Third-graders incorporate all aspects of Roman life into their explorations, reading about the food, education, and clothes of Roman citizens. Students respond to text through expressive arts and make a pair of Roman sandals. A game called "Who Am I?" teaches students how to compare and contrast as they determine the names of prominent Romans and learn about their influence in society. Finally, students exercise their imaginations and write for a purpose to create an original Roman drama.

Myths and Legends
Roman mythology plays a key role in week 3. As they role-play responses to problems faced by fictional Roman heroes, students are given the opportunity to communicate ideas clearly to others. Students further develop their skills by creating an original mythological character and writing engaging narratives. The town of Pompeii provides the backdrop for students to draw conclusions as they take part in an exciting archaeological role-playing activity.

The Twilight Years
In week 4, the legacy of the great Roman Empire is examined when students compare and contrast today's culture with that of ancient Rome. They also create overlays depicting examples of Rome's gifts to the modern world. As they create a cause-and-effect paper chain, students identify important relationships. The culminating celebration includes planning and participating in a Roman feast that helps students relate classroom knowledge to real-life experiences.
