Palmquist Elementary School in California Uses Voyager Ticket to Read Program as Fundraising Tool

T.J. Ticket, reading mascot for Voyager's online reading program, Ticket to Read® kicked off Palmquist Elementary School's First Annual Ticket to Read-A-Thon Fundraiser on Monday, March 2, 2009 at 8:15 a.m., during the school's morning assembly. Students lined up sponsors from the community and asked parents and friends to pledge a penny or a flat amount for each passage read using the Ticket to Read program. The goal was to raise enough money to purchase Ticket to Read for all K-5 students to use during 2009-2010 school year.

The event ran through March 9, 2009, and by the end of the week, more than 88 percent of the 650 Palmquist students had participated. "We challenged our students to earn one million tickets," says Cherry Daniel, Palmquist's Response to Intervention Computer Lab Director. "In the first day, they earned 264,070 tickets. We then knew it was possible."

At the end of the seven-day fundraiser, students earned a total of 1,436,803 tickets, raising more than $5,000 for the school.

The school held an awards assembly on Wednesday, March 25, 2009 and prizes included:

A pizza party for the top classes at each grade level
Student medals
Piggy banks
A surfboard

"We definitely plan to do this next year," says Daniel. "T.J. Ticket has certainly made a difference in the lives of our students."

Palmquist received help and support for the fundraiser from their local Voyager representative, Gary Emert; Mottino YMCA After School Director, Anne Ryan; Palmquist RTI Computer Lab Director, Cherry Daniel; local merchants; students and parents.
